History of Therianthropy: From Ancestral Shamans to TikTok

The Millennial History of the Human-Animal Connection

Therianthropy is not a modern trend. The deep connection between humans and animals is one of the oldest and most universal human experiences. From cave paintings to TikTok feeds, humans have always felt that special bond with the animal kingdom.

The First Evidence: Cave Art (40,000 Years Ago)

The cave paintings of Lascaux (France) and Altamira (Spain), over 17,000 years old, show human figures with animal characteristics. The figure of the "Sorcerer" in the Trois-Freres cave in France, over 13,000 years old, clearly shows a being with a human body, deer antlers, and owl eyes: one of the earliest known representations of a therianthropic being.

Shamans and Medicine Men

In virtually every indigenous culture in the world, the figure of the shaman existed (and still exists), an intermediary between the human and animal world. Shamans:

  • Adopted the spirit of specific animals during rituals
  • Used skins, feathers, and masks to facilitate this connection
  • Believed they possessed "power animals" or animal spirit guides
  • Experienced spiritual transformations similar to modern shifts

Mythology: Therianthropic Gods and Beings

Ancient cultures were full of beings that combined human and animal traits:

Ancient Egypt

Egyptian gods were predominantly therianthropic:

  • Anubis: Human body, jackal head
  • Thoth: Human body, ibis head
  • Bastet: Cat goddess, protector of the home
  • Horus: Human body, falcon head

Greece and Rome

  • Minotaur: Human body, bull head
  • Centaurs: Human torso, horse body
  • Satyrs: Humans with goat horns, ears, and legs
  • Werewolf (Lycanthrope): From Greek mythology about Lycaon

Japan

  • Kitsune: The spirit fox, capable of transforming into a human
  • Tanuki: The magical raccoon with transformation abilities
  • Tengu: Beings with raptor bird characteristics

Pre-Columbian Americas

  • Nahual: In Mesoamerican tradition, each person has a twin animal spirit
  • Jaguar: Mayan and Aztec jaguar warriors believed they embodied the feline's spirit
  • Quetzalcoatl: The feathered serpent, symbol of human-animal duality

The Middle Ages and Werewolves

During the European Middle Ages, belief in lycanthropy (wolf transformation) was so widespread that trials were held against people accused of being werewolves. This reflects how deeply embedded the idea of human-animal connection was in the collective psyche.

19th - 20th Century: The Spiritual Renaissance

With the rise of spiritualism and neopagan practices, the connection with totemic animals returned strongly:

  • Totemism in anthropology described identification with animals in indigenous cultures
  • Western neoshamanic practices popularized "power animals"
  • The New Age movement of the 70s-80s popularized "spirit animals"

The 1990s: Birth of the Modern Therian Community

The therian community as we know it today was born on the internet in the 90s:

  • 1993: In the Usenet group alt.horror.werewolves, some users began genuinely identifying as spiritual werewolves, not just genre fans
  • 1995: The term "therian" was coined to distinguish spiritual identity from simple fandom
  • Late 90s: The first dedicated forums emerged, such as The Werelist and Therian Guide

2000-2010: Online Consolidation

  • Forums like Therian.net and WereList built structured communities
  • Specific vocabulary was developed: shifts, theriotype, otherkin
  • The community debated and refined its understanding of therian identity

2020-Present: The TikTok Era

The COVID-19 pandemic and the TikTok boom completely transformed the community:

  • Millions of young people discovered the therian community on social media
  • Quadrobics and masks became a global trend
  • Media representation increased exponentially
  • The community became globalized and enormously diversified

What History Teaches Us

The history of therianthropy shows us that the human need to connect with the animal kingdom is universal and timeless. It's not a fad: it's a fundamental human experience that has taken different forms throughout the centuries. The modern therian community is simply the contemporary expression of something humans have felt since the beginning of time.
